Mikey Jarrell

Ph.D. Student in Economics, Development Economist

Mikey Jarrell is a Ph.D. student in Economics at the University of California San Diego and a development economist whose work spans development and environmental economics. His research focuses on policies that can improve the lives of people in low-income settings, with particular attention to lead exposure and pollution from unsafe lead-acid battery repair and recycling. He is also Research Director and a founding team member of Partnership for Battery Action, a nonprofit working to end lead poisoning caused by unsafe battery recycling. His current projects examine practical ways to reduce pollution, improve occupational safety, and strengthen environmental regulation in developing countries, including research on battery repair and recycling in Nigeria and on the environmental effects of battery-sector policy in Brazil. He holds an M.A.Sc. in Data, Economics, and Development Policy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a B.A. in Romance Languages and Neuroscience from Bowdoin College.
